Yefrosinya Ionovna Pushkina (1867–1953), Satino-Russkoe

great-great-grandmother, mother of Ivan Sergeyevich Melnikov

Birth: 1867-04-06

Death: 1953-07-07

Grandmother of Sergei Ivanovich Melnikov (Igor's message, S339) — hence the mother of Ivan Sergeyevich, since Praskovya Timofeyevna's mother is known from her baptism record — Tatiana Artemyevna. Buried at Satino-Russkoye cemetery under one slab with Pyotr Stepanovich Brednev (1900–1957): «Pushkina Yefrosinya Ionovna 06.04.1867 – 07.07.1953» (S330).

Why Pushkina. From 1897 at the latest she was the wife of Timofei Vasilyevich Pushkin of Chernyaevka; they had Nadezhda (1897), Daria (1900), Yelena (1903), Ksenia (1907) and Mark (1909) (S341). So Ivan Sergeyevich (1895) was her son from her first marriage to Sergei Melnikov, who probably died soon after.

How this fits the registers. In 1888 and 1890 Sergiy Avraamov Melnikov and his wife Nadezhda Yakovlevna had Matfei and Vera (S327). If Ivan (1895) is the son of the same Sergiy, then Yefrosinya was his second wife and Nadezhda had died by then. If Ivan's father was a different Sergei Melnikov, then Sergiy Avraamov's line is not ours. The answer lies in Ivan's 1895 birth record (Chernyaevka registers 1891–1899, Tula archive).

Not a native of Chernyaevka? In the Chernyaevka register of 1867 (GATO f. 93 op. 1 d. 383, FamilySearch, film 007563019, frames 796–798) there is no Euphrosyne among the girls born in March and April — neither on 6 April nor on 25 March (the same date in the Old Style). She probably came from a neighbouring parish and married into Chernyaevka.

Family tradition (Valery Sergeevich's story, S342): she was dying for a long time and asked her grandchildren to hold her hand; in the village she was thought to be a witch.
