Valeri Sergeevich Melnikov’s birthplace on 1 July 1949, according to his marriage certificate (S4). “Chekhov district” is the wording of a later document; at the time of his birth, the district was called Lopasnya.

To search for a birth record, the date 1949 and the name of the village itself are important. The Kulakovsky village council was transferred to the Serpukhov district in 1959, so later directories may refer Kulakovo to another district.

The 1981 certificate confirms Valery’s birthplace indicated therein. It does not establish where exactly his parents lived before or after birth. The original 1949 entry must be requested from the registry office or archives.

There is a St Nicholas church in Kulakovo. Valery Sergeevich remembers that as a child he visited — and perhaps lived — here both in winter and in summer, and thinks that "Aunt Pushkina", grandmother Valya's cousin aunt, lived in the former rector's house of this church (S352).
