Kresty, Zinovyevo and Ivanovskoye are names for the same village, where Timofei Sokolov and Tatyana Domanova came from. Their daughter Paraskeva, born in 1895, is probably our Praskovya Timofeevna Melnikova; this identification still needs confirmation. A directory presented by Familio as an 1886 edition lists 82 households, 531 inhabitants and two inns in Kresty.
Names and owners. According to the description of P. I. Malitsky in 1895, Zinovevo is named after the owner Zinoviev, Ivanovskoye - after Ivan Ivanovich Pfeller. The author explains the name Kresty by Crossing Roads as a guess. Later, the estate was owned by the Pfellers and Lysakovskys.
The Pfellers. From books on archive.org: Alexander Ivanovich Pfeller was an officer in the 1820s (according to the official almanacs) and a member of a Masonic lodge from 1818, and later a Bogoroditsk landowner, author of the article «On improving farming in the black-earth governorates» («Ekonom», 1845). Historians of the agrarian question list him among the landowners of Tula Governorate who wrote about farming. Filipp Ivanovich Pfeller, probably his brother, was an actual state councillor. Timofei Sokolov and Tatiana Domanova were born after the abolition of serfdom, but their grandfathers were most likely serfs of the Pfellers.
Temple and school. The stone Vvedenskaya Church was built in 1817. Malitsky names Alexander Ivanovich Pfeller as the donor; The GATO guide writes about the means of parishioners. The refectory was expanded in 1873; The Pokrovsky chapel was consecrated in 1879, Mikhailovsky in 1881. Since 1885, a parochial school operated in the village.
What has been preserved? The area's tourist passport describes an Empire-style manor house, an unfinished temple, the remains of a park and a pond; At the time of the description, the house housed a school. On Sobory.ru the temple is marked as inactive, photographs are dated 2012–2019. The status for 2026 requires fresh confirmation.
Close to other family friendly places. In a straight line from the Church of Kresty to the parish Chernyaevka - about 51 km, to Lidinka of the Teplo-Ogarevsky district - about 58 km; between Chernyaevka and Lidinka - about 7 km. This Chernyaevka is now in the Bogoroditsky district. In Sergei Melnikov’s military ID, the Volovsky district is named: the suitability of the places still needs to be checked. Distances are calculated by coordinates, not by roads.
Family route. Timofey Sokolov and Tatyana Domanova got married on October 2, 1894: the title page of the book confirms the Vvedenskaya Church in the village of Zinoviev (Kresty). “Rozhdestveno” in the FamilySearch catalog turned out to be an error. Timofey was attested in Moscow in 1902, 1908 and 1909. When and how Praskovya ended up in Chernyaevka is still unknown.
Local history landmarks. In the funds of the Bogoroditsk Zemstvo Council there are personal economic lists from 1891 ( S100 ): they can show the living conditions of specific households, but records about the family have not yet been viewed. The Kurkinsky Museum stores materials about the defense and liberation of the area in 1941 ( S103 ); events specifically in Kresty need to be checked separately.
GATO stores fully digitized household cards of Kresty for the years 1910–1912, F. 4 Op. 3 D. 981 ( S106 ), as well as additional metrics of the 19th and early 20th centuries ( S111 ). The personal courtyard of the Sokolovs or Domanovs has not yet been established on these cards.
Household census 1910–1912: community of former peasants of Pfeller - 113 households, 346 men and 396 women, 584.6 acres of allotment land ( S130 ).
