A military document names Novorossiysk as Pavel Stepanovich Kamyshanov’s birthplace in 1925. The family manuscript and photographs connect several generations of the Kamyshanov family with the city.

Family. Document S18 records Paul's birth in the city and his military service; family pedigree S27 describes the Kamyshanovs, but does not give an exact pre-war address. The connection between Pavel Stepan’s father and Novorossiysk follows from family material and requires address documents.

City and war. The Novorossiysk Historical Museum contains photographs of the pre-war city, the destruction of 1942–1943 and post-war reconstruction, as well as military newspapers. This is the context of the family, and not proof of the participation of specific Kamyshanovs in the defense of the city.

What to look for next. The record of Pavel’s birth in 1925, address books and the registry office will help establish the family’s apartment and Pavel’s path to conscription by the Tsyurupinsky district military registration and enlistment office in the territory of what is now Ukraine.
