Place in family records
Sergei Ivanovich Melnikov worked at the Podolsk repair and mechanical plant, as documented in S47 and S48.
The Podolsk M. I. Kalinin mechanical plant. From 1946 Valentina Bushina worked here as an accounting clerk, and from December 1947 Sergei Melnikov as a fitter; judging by the employment books, this is the most likely place where they met (S235, S236). From 1952 the family lived in Podolsk again: Sergei Ivanovich worked at the city’s plants until 1990, Valentina Alekseevna at the Podolsk branch of Gosbank.
Krasnaya Gorka is a district of Podolsk by Lenin Avenue and Kolkhoznaya Street, above the Pakhra, next to the cement plant. The house where Valery Melnikov was photographed in the 1960s stood here (S257); according to Igor, it is this Krasnaya Gorka in Podolsk.
Sadovaya Street. Valery Melnikov recalled (S294) that the family lived on Sadovaya, parallel to Kolkhoznaya, between Chapaeva and Furmanova streets, in one of two identical two-storey houses with eight flats. Across the road was a field with a cemetery beyond it; water was carried from the pump at the corner of Kolkhoznaya and Chapaeva, and the school was on Pavlika Morozova Street. New high-rise blocks stand there now; a similar two-storey house from 1940 stands at Sadovaya 3.
