Ishcherskaya stanitsa

Historically
Ishcherskaya stanitsa, Terek Oblast
Now
Ishcherskaya, Naursky District, Chechnya
Years
1802–1894

A Cossack stanitsa on the Terek where, by our hypothesis, the great-grandfather of Igor's wife, Dmitry Gerasimovich Chebanov (1891), came from. Chebanovs are recorded here from 1802 (S657); by the stanitsa lists of 1827 the retired Cossack Pyotr Semyonovich Chebanov was 74, and his father Semyon was “a settler from the banks of the Volga” (S655, S733). The chain of generations from Pyotr Semyonovich to Dmitry Gerasimovich is a guess: it is dashed in the tree.

Old Believers. About half of the stanitsa were Old Believers, who “are not entered in our registers” (S654). The Chebanovs appear in the Orthodox rolls of 1854 and 1858 — eight households (S539) — but lived side by side with Old Believers. If Dmitry Gerasimovich's branch was Old Believer, his birth may not be in an Orthodox register at all; then the place to look is the stanitsa family lists.

What survives. The North Ossetian archive found the Chebanovs in the lists of 1878, but it holds no parish registers or family lists of Ishcherskaya for 1891 (S579). The 1893 essay “Ishcherskaya Stanitsa” describes the life of the stanitsa and the Chebanov farmstead (S738).
